High school students will have the rare opportunity to engage directly with university professors leading one of Canada’s most timely and impactful new educational initiatives: the Homelessness Curriculum. Developed through research by Wilfrid Laurier University, York University, and the University of Guelph, this first-of-its-kind course is being launched at post-secondary institutions across the country.
In this SHSM-exclusive experience, students in the liberal arts sectors will step into the university classroom of tomorrow. Hosted in partnership with York University, this experience invites students to think critically, work collaboratively, and design human-centered solutions to one of Canada's most pressing social issues: homelessness.

Dr. Jessica Braimoh is an Assistant Professor of Criminology in the Department of Social Science at York University. Her research examines the intersections of criminalization, racialization, and social inequality, with a focus on homelessness, housing, and public space. She has co-led projects on the criminalization of encampments and on building a homelessness curriculum, and her work has been published in journals such as the Journal of Law and Social Policy, Critical Sociology, and Social Science & Medicine.

Twelve additional parking spaces will be created in the north and south laybys along Ian MacDonald Boulevard, in front of the Toronto Track Centre and the West Office Building. Our staff will be waiting there to guide you to the event space.
