This ICE training invites SHSM students who are interested in law, justice, and civic leadership to explore the forces that shape inequality and social change. Led by Dr. James Cairns, a writer, researcher, and educator whose work examines democracy, collective action, and the normalization of power, this session challenges students to think deeply about how societies organize themselves. Through guided discussion and interactive activities, students will investigate why people accept the status quo, what motivates resistance, and what a truly just and sustainable society could look like. This workshop provides an inspiring and thought provoking experience for students considering futures in law, advocacy, community work, or policy development.

Dr. James Cairns is an Associate Professor of Indigenous Studies, Law and Social Justice at Wilfrid Laurier University and the author of In Crisis, On Crisis, The Myth of the Age of Entitlement, and The Democratic Imagination. His achievements include producing widely respected scholarship on power, inequality, and democratic change and contributing to Canadian public discourse through his work as a staff writer for the Hamilton Review of Books and as Community Relations Director for the Riverside Reading Series. Dr. Cairns studies the historical and cultural forces that shape political institutions, public attitudes, and patterns of inequality, with a focus on how ideas take hold and influence social outcomes.
